I'm just curious and someone please correct me if I'm wrong.I think that sometime ago I read on this site that the school maintenance budget was somewhere in the neighborhood of $100,000.00 - $120,000.00 for all 6 (soon to be 7) schools in Union Co. I have been in the repair/maintenance buisness for most of my adult life and here is my take: To hire a qualified maintenance supervisor the salary would probably be in the neighborhood of $35,000.Add in @ least 3 skilled craftsmen to do most of the work & you're talking another $60,000.00 minimum.(Although I doubt many people that are skilled in electrical, plumbing, carpentry, ect. are going to work for $8.00 an hr.with few benefits). Even though I do not have a math degree, that adds up tp $95,000.00 in salary alone.I have long been of the opinion that in order to properly keep that many buildings in good condition the Maintenance Dept.need to be ran much like a team that I was on in the Air Force. The SMART Team (Structural,Maintenance & Repair Team) would send in an inspector into each building a week prior to the craftsmen arriving. This inspector would write up any repair problem that he/she observed then the next week the craftsmen would arrive and complete those stated repairs and move on to the next building.Being proactive in this manner kept emergency repair cost down, kept buildings in good condition and kept people in the department working & busy.
